So what next steps can I take when my spouse doesn’t want to come back to the conversation?

Express clearly and calmly how it makes you feel and ask your partner to make a commitment to return after he/she/they has had a chance to take space. Sometimes explaining how much you need this for emotional safety can help someone who doesn't feel like they need this understand the importance. And of course share this substack!

Wonderful! I think you'll find it really helpful over the long-term. Even in the very best marriages this is a good habit to have in our back pocket for those triggered moments that can and will happen to us all!
